Rust Fungus in Guatemala
We’ve been sharing news about the drought in Brazil and the havoc it has played on coffee prices for some time now (search “Coffee Price Surge“), but another story worthy of note is the rust fungus that is devastating Central America.
On July 28, 2014 NPR.org posted “Rust Devastates Guatemala’s Prime Coffee Crop And Its Farmers.” Read this story. It paints a vivid picture of the toll this fungus has taken on the workers and their crops.
We were left with a deeper appreciation for the cup of coffee before us, and more importantly, the crop owners and workers, who often sacrifice so much simply to provide us a drink we take for granted. Let us know what you think!
