Why Consumers are Demanding Larger Coffee Cups

Mar 22, 2023 | Blog, Coffee

As we mentioned in a previous blog, one of the biggest coffee trends of 2023 is a renewed emphasis on larger coffee cups.

Perhaps in the past – think Big Gulps and Super-Sized soft drinks of yesteryear – demanding larger cups was looked at as a sign of gluttony or excess. Well, no longer. Today’s larger coffee cups simply signify a change in the myriad ways the world consumes its favorite beverage.

Take a look at just three of the reasons consumers are demanding larger coffee cups, and why it’s poised to be a big deal in the years to come.

  1. One Size Does Not Fit All

Is there anything worse than ordering a cup of coffee and it not being big enough to satisfy your need for a caffeine fix? When it comes to coffee, one size most certainly does not fit all. Those who are seeking a mid-afternoon pick-me-up or want an extra boost in the morning may prefer a larger coffee cup size to deliver that daily dose of java. There are also certain types of drinks, like cappuccinos, that simply call for larger cups to be properly prepared and enjoyed.

  1. Variety – It’s More than Just the Spice of Life

The popularity of cold brew and iced coffee drinks is skyrocketing. Last year, cold brew constituted upwards of 30% of some sales figures, with their iced counterparts not far behind.

And when it comes to cool, sweet beverages enjoyed over ice on a hot summer’s day, most consumers have the same outlook: the bigger the better.

Not only has our societal coffee menu expanded, however, but ingredients – such as whipped cream, flavorings, and – of course – ice, also adds volume to a beverage, necessitating a larger vessel. In other words, “We’re gonna need a bigger mug.”

  1. Sustainability Soars

Today’s coffee lovers – particularly millennials – want to-go cups that fit their on-the-move lifestyle, and attention has been steadily turning toward reusable, sustainable coffee cups that come in all colors of the rainbow while reducing one’s carbon footprint. And – if you’re going to get your favorite beverage for the road, you may as well get the largest size available to have a sip at every stop, shop, and errand. In other words, go big – or go home.

Bottom line? Customers should have options when it comes to cup size so they can get exactly what they want. And when it comes down to it, there’s no denying that larger coffee cups offer a multitude of benefits. Is there such a thing as “too much of a good thing?” Absolutely. But those things aren’t found in the bottom – or the top – of your favorite mug. But hopefully one of Orinoco’s classic roasts is. If not, we have plenty of options to choose from.
